'Extra Parts' Bags

In 1962, to encourage sales of spare parts, Meccano packaged a selection of the most common parts in polythene bags. These were to be displayed in a prominent position on a display board or rotating dispenser, and enabled self-selection by the customer. These packs would also have been useful for shops who had no interest in stocking the complete range of Meccano spares, either because of lack of space or, more probably, lack of expertise. Thus Meccano spares could be displayed and sold in a much larger range of shops than would otherwise have been possible. What a great pity that such a system is not still in use today!

These were called 'Extra Parts' rather than 'Spare Parts'. The thinking behind this was to avoid the impression that Meccano parts wore out and needed to be replaced.
As can be seen from the advertisement, the whole series consisted of twelve separate bags of parts, labelled A to M (excluding I) and four separate prices.
Thanks to the efforts of Cameron Parle and others, it has eventually been possible to trace details and examples of all of the twelve parts bags, details of which are given below.
