Alternative Pipe Mounting
I decided I needed a method of mounting the pipes to the pipeboard that was
both easy to make and easy to use, so I came up with the idea of the 'bolt
cradle'.
You will need a pair for each pipe, and I describe the method of construction
below:
1. Cut out the 1.5mm ply to the pipe width. The length is not critical,
mine varied from 18mm for the smallest pipe to 30mm for the largest pipe.
2. Drill a hole in the centre to take a M5 x 12 hexhead bolt.
3. Position the head such that two of its sides are parallel to the vertical
ply sides and glue two lengths of 1/8 x 1/8" balsa tightly against these.
This is very important as it will stop the bolt head from turning.
4. On the larger pipes, glue another two lengths of 1/8 x 1/8" balsa
down the outside edges of the ply to make the fixing more stable. The
very small pipes may require the slightly-protruding balsa to be sanded flush
to the ply sides.
5. One completed cradle is glued on to the botom of the pipe, such that it
is just above the air tubing holebut not impeding it.
6. Glue the other fixing a similar distance down from the top of the pipe.
7. Mark and drill these bolt positions on the pipeboard and secure with a
washer and nut.
Should you need to remove the cradles at any time, this can easily be done
by cutting through the balsa with a sharp craft knife and sanding down the
back of the pipe. |
