Beware of
Buying any Home-Made Organ
Over the last 12 years, thousands of small organs have been made all around
the world using my designs. My original vision has been fully realised in
opening up a hitherto closed shop to other people like myself whose pleasure
is making things for themselves.
Unfortunately I have come across, on a few occasions, people who have bought
a home made organ, only to find that it is more trouble than it's worth.
The vast majority of organs built to my plans are very successful and well
made, indeed some are made with such love and craftsmanship that they could
probably be seen as the best made small organs in the world. Unfortunately
some are doomed to failure due to all manner of reasons and these are often
the ones that end up being passed on, usually being described as "just needs
tuning" or 90% completed.
Even worse are the ones that have been quickly and badly made, often just
with the view of selling them on. These can be well finished on the
outside but only just about squeak out a tune. A home-made organ can look
nice and sound nice but still be poorly made and unreliable. It should be
remembered that my plans are for amateurs to build for their own amazement,
not to build a commercial product.

If you want
to buy a Working Organ
Anyone not having a good knowledge of both what they are buying and the seller,
should only purchase a reputable commercially made organ, which is shown
to be in full working order. There are of course some superb home-made ones
which will be just as good, but unless you know the builder, and they are
prepared to offer a meaningful after-sales service, my advice is to walk
away. Never buy one that "only needs tuning" etc.
I offer this warning as a direct result of my own personal involvement with
"sold on organs" all sold to nice trusting older people, some of them only
fit for firewood, and I do mean the organs!
I am no longer prepared to offer any advice regarding second-hand organs.
You have been warned!
